Slow Motion (Technique)

Slow motion is a film making technique in which the action shown on screen appears slower than normal to the audience. This is often achieved by filming at a faster rate than normal, and them replaying the film at a standard speed, therefore time on screen appears to be slowed down. This can be used to portray a dramatic moment in the film or put emphasis on the action and showing the character doing something over the top.The technique can also be used to create suspense as they are watching footage that is slower than normal therefore they want to know what the outcome will be.

One of the most notable modern day films that utilized slow motion quite well was The Matrix (2001), various scenes in the film implement slow motion, they usually imply that Neo (Keanu Reeves) is using his reflexes or is focusing. For example the bullet dodge scene in which he successfully dodges bullets that are being shot at him by falling backwards in slow motion. This allows connects the viewers with the film as it allows them to realise that this scene shows that he is still inside The Matrix, and it is not reality.
